GMSA History & Timeline

1979

GMSA Founded

The Greater Memphis Soccer Association officially became a member of the Tennessee State Soccer Association, which was formed three years earlier in 1976.  The original league consisted of two men's divisions.

Fall 1993

Coed Division Added

For the first time, a coed division was added to GMSA.  The initial division consisted of four teams, and originally played games on Friday nights, before moving to Tuesday nights a year later.

Fall 1994

Men's Divisions Expand

With an increasing number of teams, GMSA splits into three men's divisions.  As has been the case since the leagues inceptions, divisions are based
primarily on skill level rather than age.

Spring 1999

Committee Takes Over

David Maybry officially retires as President of GMSA; operations were taken over by a committee of officers or other representatives from the league.

Fall 1999

GMSA Moves To MRSC;
Acquires MemphisSoccer.com

GMSA officially makes the move to play all games at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, following a trial period for two of GMSA's men's divisions during the 1999 spring season; the acquisition of the MemphisSoccer.com domain name also came that fall.

Spring 2000

More Growth

A rapid increase in the number of men's teams precipitates expanding to an additional men's division, with the formation of the Men's Fourth Division.

Spring 2002

Coed Grows Too

The move to MRSC has only enhanced the amount of growth GMSA has seen, this time allowing for the addition of a second coed division, followed by a third in Spring 2005.

Fall 2007

The Teams Keep On Coming

Now numbering more than three dozen men's teams, GMSA expands its men's divisions again, this time adding the Premier Division at the top of league, bringing the total number of men's divisions to five.

Fall 2008

MWSA Joins GMSA

The Memphis Women's Soccer Association officially merges with GMSA prior to the Fall 2008 season, adding eight teams within two women's divisions
that play on Thursday nights.  This gives GMSA a total of 79 teams league-wide,
a high-water mark in league history to that point.

Fall 2011

Legends Are Born

As a means to keep many of our older players playing the game beyond a time where they may have retired, GMSA forms its first division based on age requirements, with the creation of the Men's Over-35 "Legends" Division, which plays in a small-sided 7v7 format on Monday nights.
